Season of the Church Year: Great Green Growing Season/ Common Time (green)

Story in Scripture: Luke 2:22- 38

As we continue to celebrate the coming of Jesus in Bethlehem, it is a special time to consider what Jesus’s first years were like. Although Mary and Joseph were beginning to understand just how important Jesus is, they were probably frequently surprised by him. In this story, we learn about how Anna and Simeon proclaim the good news of who Jesus is. Both of these wise prophets acknowledge the divinity of Jesus- surely causing quite a stir in the temple. Mary and Joseph have arrived to follow Jewish custom in presenting their child to God. They have waited patiently for the right time and have journeyed from Bethlehem as a family. Both Simeon and Anna are there, waiting for God’s promise to be fulfilled. Imagine Mary’s astonishment when these strangers approach her and her baby- confirming what they have been told by the Angels. This is a significant story in that Anna is also written in to God’s story as a prophet. As a woman, she provides a unique perspective on God’s promise, especially because women had a very different role during this historical time than they do now. Isn’t it amazing that God chose to share the good news of Jesus in such unexpected ways? I have included more questions than usual below because it is important to take into consideration all the varying points of view in this incredible story.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

Now I wonder how it feels to hold this baby?

I wonder how Simeon feels as he looks at the baby? I wonder how Simeon knows this baby is the Christ?

I wonder how Mary feels about what Simeon said to God?

I wonder how Anna feels when she looks at the baby? I wonder how Anna knows that Jesus is the Christ?

I wonder how Anna feels telling people that Christ has come?

I wonder why Anna is the first to go and tell that God has given the promised gift of Jesus the Christ?

I wonder how Joseph feels about this baby? I wonder how Mary feels about her baby?

Prayer:

“Father, thank you for Jesus. Thank you for Mary, Joseph, Anna, and Simeon. This story helps us to understand that you include all people in your story. You love all people and want them to learn about Jesus. Help us to share your good news with our friends. You have given us such a wonderful gift, we want to share it! Amen.”

4th- 5th Grade Students will Learn about Communion

Students in the 4 and 5 grade classroom will be spending a season learning about Communion (also called Eucharist or the Lord’s Supper). Beginning on February 5, they will spend four weeks delving into the history and beauty of this incredible sacrament. On March 4, they will have the opportunity to engage in an entire service, taking communion at the end. This class will be taught by Julia Guy and we will be using a wonderful resource called Jesus With Us, The Gift of the Eucharist, (Tarzia & Ferri) an age appropriate text that will inspire conversation about this important element of our faith. Please join with us in praying for these young people and their journey into a deeper expression of life with Christ.

Advent IV- The Wise Men (Dec. 18th)

Story in Scripture: Matthew 2: 1-12

As we have learned together through the weeks of Advent, we have followed the journey of the Prophets, Mary and Joseph, and the Sheperds. This week, we celebrate the inclusion of the three “Wise Men” in God’s Gospel story. These learned men were charged by King Herod to find the Christ child that had been prophesied. We know that King Herod intended to destroy his “competition,” once they found out where the baby was. One of the most significant aspects of this story is that the Wise Men were experts in their various areas of academia- they were perhaps the most skeptical of those that visited Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Yet they worship him, acknowleding his divinity. What a beautiful illustration of how knowledge and mystery can both manifest in our faith and understanding of who God is. As Advent draws us closer and closer to Christmas morning, I pray that your families will take time each day to be still and quiet, relishing the anticipation of the celebration of the birth of Jesus. In joyfully welcoming Christmas, we have the opportunity to also look forward to and await the Resurrection and God’s glorious redemption. Praise be to God! Guiding Questions for Discussion:

I wonder what the Wise Men were thinking when Herod sent them to find the baby Jesus?

These men were very smart and had learned about a lot of things- the stars, history, the natural world… I wonder if they had learned about what the prophets said about Jesus? I wonder how they felt when the realized that the prophets words were true?

I wonder what their journey to Bethlehem was like? I wonder what they brought with them as they traveled?

I wonder what they thought they would find when they arrived in Bethlehem? Do you think they were expecting to find the King of the World as a baby in a manger?

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank you for the story of the Wise Men. We know that you are with us as we learn, as we wonder, and as we ask questions. We are so glad that you have included us in the story of Jesus’ birth. As Christmas gets closer, help us to remember that we are so blessed to celebrate that you have come to be with us and that you provide all that we need. Amen.”

Advent III- The Shepherds (Dec. 11th)

Story in Scripture: Luke 2: 15-20

This week is the week that we celebrate the role of the Shepherds in the Christmas story. These men were literally on the very outskirts of community when God included them in this incredble story. They were considered unclean, separate, and apart. As important as their work was in the culture of the time, the way in which they worked was not respected as you might think it should be. And yet, in that amazing moment, and angel of God appeared to them. In our storytelling, we explain: “They were afraid. Their hearts were beating so loudly. When they could hear something besides their own hearts, they thought they heard singing in the sky! That also scared them until they heard the words of the song. The angels were singing, “Do not be afraid.” Angels often say that, because it is scary to have a messenger of God come to you. The angels singing sounded something like this: “Don’t be afraid. We bring you tidings of great joy. Peace on earth and good will to everyone. A Child is born. Go. Hurry. Run to Bethlehem to see the Child who will change everything.” How wonderful it is that God includes us all, even those on the periphery, in His story. Whether others consider us worthy, God does. At the risk of being redundant, may I encourage you to create an atmosphere of preparation in your home during this Advent season. It’s easy to focus on the planning and busy-ness of Christmas presents and family visits. Spending intentional time reading what the prophets said about Jesus’ coming, praying quietly to know the ‘way to go,’ and focusing our thoughts on the glory of Jesus’ birth will make space for the importance of Christmas as we begin Advent. Then the Christmas presents and family visits can be truly enjoyed in the context of the miracle of Jesus’ birth and our salvation through Him. Advent II- The Journey to Bethlehem (December 3rd)

Story in Scripture: Micah 5: 2, 4-5

As we continue to prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of Jesus, we focus on the Journey to Bethlehem. Today, your child and their classmates talked about the hardships suffered by Mary and Joseph as they traveled. The children are often incredulous about the fact that Mary traveled so far while very pregnant. The donkey that accompanied them played an integral role in their safe arrival in Bethlehem, didn’t he? After discussing that the Prophets pointed the way toward Bethlehem, we travel alongside Mary and Joseph (and the donkey!) on this exhausting and trying journey. The trip is full of uncertainty, wonder, and excitement. Of course, we know that things continue to be challenging once they arrive in Bethlehem- we can only imagine! But this week, we draw our attention to the journey. God was with Mary and Joseph along their way and he is with us as well when we travel through strange, confusing, and often difficult times. What a beautiful example Mary and Joseph are to us- they walked out in faith onto a terrifying and uncertain path, knowing thay God was by their side and giving them strength to sustain the passage! Again, I encourage you to create an atmosphere of preparation in your home during this Advent season. It’s easy to focus on the planning and busy-ness of Christmas presents and family visits. Story in Scripture: Isaiah 35: 1-10

This week, we begin the season of Advent, a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus. Advent is also a special time to learn more about the world as it was when Jesus was born and to better understand the importance of his coming. The first week is spent focusing on the Prophets who foretold of Jesus’ coming. When explaining the role of a prophet to children, we describe them as people who were so so so very close to God that they were listening for his whisper, his shout, his command at all times. They were listening carefully so that they could share what God had to say with the rest of the world. Simply put, “Prophets are the people who know the most important things. They know which way to go. They are the ones who showed us the way. The prophets were so important because they helped the world begin to get ready. Without their words, we may not have been looking toward Bethlehem. Now we can go to Bethlehem too.” This week, I encourage you to create an atmosphere of preparation in your home. It’s easy to focus on the planning and busy-ness of Christmas presents and family visits. The Ten Best Ways to Live (October 30th & November 6th)

Season of the Church Year: Common Time/ “Great Green Growing” Season (green)

Story in Scripture: Exodus 19-20; Deuteronomy 6:4-6

The Ten Commandments are such a pivotal message in the Old Testament. As Moses returned from Mount Sinai, he brought with him and whole new way of being in the world. God’s framework for our lives, in communion with him and one another are so important. When we teach the children about them, we divide them into two main groups. We must consider ways that God tells us to love him and ways that God tells us to love one another. This is the way we phrase the scripture (with a few notations about how they are explained): 1. Do not serve other Gods. (He is our one true God, the creator of all things and our Father.) 2. Make no idols to serve. (God should come first in your life. Always. Nothing should be more important than him.) 3. I am God… do not speak my name lightly. (When we speak to and about God, we must remember that he is powerful, mighty, and BIG. We should be respectful.) 4. Keep the Sabbath holy… to rest and remember the gifts of creation. (Even God rested! We should find time to be quiet and calm.) 5. Honor your father and your mother. (God gave us these people to protect, care, and provide for us. We should always treat them with love.) 6. Do not kill. (Remember that even Jesus treated those who tortured him with peace and love. God doesn’t want us to kill others and take away his gift of life.) 7. Do not break your marriage. (God intends for families to stay together. He knows that families need one another, husbands & wives must love and respect one another and care for their families.) 8. Do not steal. (We should never take something that doesn’t belong to us.) 9. Do not lie. (When we are honest with our words and our actions, we are following God’s plan for our lives.) 10. Do not even want what others have. (We must be grateful for what we have and be thankful instead of jealous.)

Noah & the Ark (October 23rd)

Season of the Church Year: Common Time/ “Great Green Growing” Season (green)

Story in Scripture: Genesis 6:9- 9:29

Many children know the story of Noah and the Ark from their early childhood. Nursery rooms, day care centers, infant pajamas- all remind us of this incredible story and the way in which God drew close to Noah and challenged the moral norms of the day. The lesson today focused primarily in the way in which Noah was in communion with God. Noah and his family loved the Lord and listened to his direction in their lives. Even though he was undoubtably surprised by the direction that God sent him! Secondly, the discussion today also focused on the way in which Noah and his family were brought to a realization of hope and new life as the flood waters began to recede. Although it is easy to attend only to the variety of animals on board.... this story is more accurately a story of separation, inspiration, distruction, patience, redemption, and, at last, new life. The children will also be enjoying a beautifully illustrated book called Noah’s Ark, by Peter Spier, which aids in an engaged discussion of the reality of the story.

I wonder how it felt to be in the Ark with all the rain?

I wonder what it was like to be surrounded by so much water?

I wonder how it felt to be washed clean and new and to start over again?

I wonder how God felt about the animals and the people in the Ark?

I wonder how they felt when they saw the rainbow and understood the promise?

“Father, thank you for the story of Noah. Help me to understand the ways that you direct my life. I want to do the things that please you and I know that you want the best for me. Come near to me the way you came near to Noah. Thank you for my family, my friends, my pets, and all the ways that I enjoy your blessings every day. Amen.”

The Holy Family (October 16th)

**It may seem strange to jump from Creation to the Holy Family, but with Advent right around the corner, this lesson provided a way for the children to begin connecting the very beginning of life with the redemption of life to come. This lesson helps children to understand the bond between two of God's amazing creative acts in Genesis and in the Christmas story.**

As Advent and the celebration of Christmas draw closer, we will begin to focus our attention on what life was like when Jesus was born. By learning more about Mary and Joseph and their family, we can begin to understand the way in which God chose to send his son into a simple normal family, one perhaps not far different from our own. Mary and Joseph were in a nique situation, of course, but the children today disussed them as individuals like themselves. They will wonder together about the ways that God in in situations that often seem unfortunate or difficult. Sometimes, God comes to us in surprising and unique ways that are often totally unexpected. Another topic of discussion today was the way in which creatures such as cows, donkeys, and sheep were present on the day that Jesus was born. What a humbling thought! Animals bowed down to our savior as well. Wise Men, who knew so much about the stars and science; shepherds, who were surely as stunned as their flock to see this miraculous sight.... the story is full of mystery and will hopefully lead to some fruitful discussion as Advent begins.

I wonder which of the members of the Holy Family is most like you?

I wonder if other people understood how special the Holy Family was?

“Dear God, as the weather begins to cool and Christmas is around the corner, help me to begin thinking about why it is such a special, important season. Help me to remember that you came to be with us when you sent your son in such a surprising way. I love you Lord- thank you for loving us. Amen.”

Looking forward: Now that we have laid the groundwork for Advent and the culmination in many ways of God’s desire to have relationship with us, we will look back at the other ways in which God came near to us in unique and surprising ways. I encourage you to read over the story of Noah and the Ark with Genesis 6:9- 9:29.

Circle of the Church Year (October 2nd)

Season of the Church Year: Common Time/ “Great Green Growing” Season (green)

Story in Scripture: Genesis 1:1- 2:3

Each Sunday, the Godly Play teachers review the season that we are in. They reflect with the children about the season, what God may be trying to teach us during this time, and they encourage the children to look forward to the seasons to come. Through a directed lesson, the children will learn today about the importance of acknowledging and considering these seasons as we worship, learn, and pray each week. The concept of God’s timing and His provision of seasons for preparation and growth will be discussed. They will talk about the “Great Growing Season,” Advent, Christmas, Resurrection and the Easter Season, and the day of Pentecost. Your child will probably bring home a beaded cord with a colored bead to represent each of the 52 Sundays in the year. I recommend that you put this cord in a place where daily Bible reading takes place so that you can consider the seasons throughout the year. Remember, the natural seasons of the year help us to look back with gratitude and look forward with anticipation... God has provided us with seasons in our faith to do the same.

Thank you also for the seasons of the Church Year, so that we can remember to prepare our hearts for what is to come and can remember back to the beautiful things that have taken place. Amen.”

Creation (September 25th)

Story in Scripture: Genesis 1:1- 2:3

This week, your child learned about and discussed the Creation story. This beautiful story reminds us of the amazing power that God has to move, energize, empower, and inspire the world around us. As the chlidren contemplate each incredible part of creation.... the light.... the darkness separated from the light... water... dry land... plants and growing things... the sun, moon, and stars... the animals of the seas, lakes, and rivers... the birds that fly... and finally the animals that move about on the earth.... everything is filled with the beauty and magnificence of God! During the lesson, your child’s teacher will also encourage them to consider the importance of what God did last: he rested! There are so many important facets of this lesson to open up conversation about the ways in which God leads us. We are an incredible creation of God. He made us. He loves and cherishes us. All of the natural world- trees, flowers, horses, beetles, ponds, even mosquitos (!) are part of God’s amazing story. And he models for us how to enjoy these things through a special thing called sabbath- even God rested to enjoy what he had made.

The Good Shepherd & the Lost Sheep (September 11th)

Season of the Church Year: Common Time/ “Great Green Growing” Season (green)

Story in Scripture: Psalm 23

This parable, written by David, outlines for us beautiful imagery of the way that God truly loves us. With the children, the story is told in a hands-on, visual way, with the Good Shepherd leading the way to clear clean waters and also through dark places (represented by large black felt shapes). It is very powerful to talk with children about the Good Shepherd’s dedication to every last sheep. During our story telling today, the teacher illuded to a counting of each sheep. When one is found to be missing, the teacher moves the Good Shepherd back through it all, including the dark places, to find the missing or lost sheep. One of the most insightful responses I’ve ever heard from a child was this: After the story was complete and a connection was made between Jesus and the Good Shepherd, a student once exclaimed, “What? That good shepherd was actually Jesus the whole time!!?!?!? Wow!” This story is a fantastic way to bring the glory of God’s care for us into focus for the little ones. With the older children, this story provides an excellent beginning to a conversation about spiritual disciplines (connecting to the structure and boundary of the sheep fold), as well as the guidance of Jesus in their lives- even through places that are dark and confusing- Jesus goes first to lead us through to the other side!

I wonder how many sheep really could live in this place?

I wonder if you have ever had to go through places of danger?

I wonder how the sheep feel when they are with the Good Shepherd?

I wonder how the Good Shepherd feels about the sheep?

Prayer:

“Dear Jesus, thank you so much for being our Good Shepherd. You care for us, you guide us, and you protect us. Help me to follow you and stay near your side, no matter if I am in times that are easy or hard. I am so grateful that you are in my life. Amen.”

Looking forward: Next week, we will enjoy a time for musical worship and reflection. After that, we will be entering into a season of learning about Jesus’ early ministry, beginning with the calling of the twelve disciples (Mark 3: 7-19).

As we enter deeper into the Great Green Growing Season, we will be delving into scripture that illustrates the ministry of Jesus. We focused this week on the story of the Feeding of the 5,000. This miracle was not only a testament to the power of Jesus, but also an illustration of the disciples’ trust in their Savior. Children often marvel at this story because it is so hands-on. To imagine 5 loaves and 2 fishes… amazingly able to feed a nearly innumerable crowd of men, women, and children. I recommend talking with your child about God’s unexpected provisions. Perhaps there is a story from your own life that will lend itself to this conversation. This story truly provides a tangible example of how amazing God is and how much he wants to care for the needs of his people.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

I wonder how the disciples are feeling about what just happened?

I wonder how the crowd feels?

I wonder why the crowd thinks Jesus is the Christ?

I wonder why the people want to make Jesus their king?

I wonder what kind of king Jesus would be?

I wonder why Jesus slipped away?

“Dear Lord, help me to be ready to see you do amazing things in my life. Even when I think I don’t have enough to give, please show me all the wonderful things that YOU can do. I trust you and I know that your story is the best story for my life. Thank you for feeding me, just like you fed those 5,000 people. Amen.”

Story in Scripture: Psalm 5: 7

This Sunday’s lesson centered around the experience of being in a Sanctuary. Children discussed the importance of entering reverently and peacefully into the classroom (sometimes called the Worship Space). Their teacher helped them to visualize and give words to the various expectations we have for their behavior in the classroom. The primary directives that they will return to throughout this conversation are that, in the Sanctuary, we (1) Walk peacefully, (2) Talk softly, (3) Move slowly (there’s no reason to hurry!), and (4) Give our friends time and space to be with God. Their teacher will also discuss with them the use of reminders, should they need them. The overall purpose of this lesson is to prepare the children to engage in worship corporately and independently on Sundays. Teachers will revisit these concepts frequently throughout the year.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

Now I wonder how we can show God that we are ready to worship?

I wonder how God knows that we are listening to him?

Many people choose to worship God through story-telling, singing, making art work, and reading. What are your favorite ways to worship God? Why?

Prayer:

“Father, help me to enter into a time of worship with you peacefully. I want to spend time with you, but it’s hard to slow down when things are so busy. Please meet me every day to share our love together and to teach me about your story. Amen.”

Orientation to the Classroom Sanctuary

Beginning on August 14^th, Godly Play students will participate in several lessons that orient them to their time in the classroom sanctuary. These lessons may seem tedious to older children or to those who have been in the Godly Play environment for several years, but they are a vital re-centering of everyone’s expectations for the classroom sanctuary. These lessons focus on four ways to prepare ourselves to be with God (I’ve also included in italics the ways in which we explain these expectations):

*In the classroom sanctuary, we talk softly. This is a place to spend time talking and listening to God. We don’t want to interrupt someone else’s worship, so we use quiet words and peaceful language.

*In the classroom sanctuary, we walk peacefully. There is no reason to rush in this place. We can walk slowly and take our time. Outside, we can run and jump; here, we focus on other things.

*In the classroom sanctuary, we worship thoughtfully. This is a special time to spend thinking about God. We can remember the stories from the Bible, make artwork that helps us to better understand, and we can sing and listen to music to worship. We only have a short time in the classroom sanctuary, so we think carefully about how to spend it.

*In the classroom sanctuary, we feast together and pray. Jesus shared special meals with his friends and the grownups share a special meal together too in the “big church.” God has blessed us with so many beautiful fruits to enjoy; we get to share them together and pray as a family of believers.

In continuation of this lesson, teachers will refer back to these simple expectations again and again. Each Sunday, during “Circle Time” (the first few moments of their time together each week), the teacher reminds them that they are in a special place…. a place unlike their living room, school classroom, playground, backyard…. it is a special place meant for spending time with God… the classroom sanctuary.

I encourage you to discuss these topics with your child at home, especially on Sundays before they arrive at church. Developing a deeper and more consistent understanding of the sacredness of the sanctuary will enable them to build a healthy perspective on worship as they grow.

Story of Ruth (August 7th)

Season of the Church Year: Common Time/ “Great Green Growing” Season (green)

Story in Scripture: Ruth 1: 6-17

As we explored the story of Ruth on Sunday, we connected God’s story between the generations that preceded her and those that will come after. Ruth is King David’s Great Grandmother! This story focuses attention on the nomadic events of Ruth’s life with her mother-in-law Naomi after the death of her husband. She chooses to stay with Naomi, rather than return to her own people. Later, when they are gathering grain, Boaz sees Ruth and they eventually wed. A few generations later, David was born to Ruth’s grandson Jesse. It is quite engaging for children to realize that Ruth was Jesus’ ancestor. During the lesson, we ask the children to wonder about whether Ruth knew how special her marriage with Boaz would prove to be.

Story of Jacob (July 31st)

Story in Scripture: Genesis 12:24- 25:11

In our learning this week about Jacob, drew a connection between he and his father Isaac, Sarah and Abraham’s first-born son. This helps to weave the story of God’s Great Family. We learned about his twin brother Esau and their struggle with wanting to be first. Our storytelling lays out the trick that Rebekah and Jacob play on Isaac so that he thinks he is giving his blessing to Esau, though it is only Jacob in disguise. To protect Jacob from the consequences of this trick, he is sent out to find a wife, but he is tricked too. The long and complicated story of God’s Family reminds us of our human folly and God’s sovereignty. The story concludes with Jacob’s dream about wrestling God and thus being re-named “Israel”. The 12 Tribes of Israel, then are drawn from his 12 sons.

Story of Sarai (July 24th)

Story in Scripture: Genesis 12- 23 & 1 Peter 3:6

This week, we learned about the life of Sarah, the wife of Abraham, father of the Great Family. Much of Sarah’s story centers around her relationship with her husband as they await God’s promise of a family. It’s a bit tricky to explain to children, but we tell the story of Hagar (whom we call a “helper”) and the birth of Ishmael. The fulfillment of God’s promise in the birth of Isaac is celebrated and the sad conflict between Sarah and Hagar is told directly, leaving time for the children to reflect on how each person involved might have felt. Our storytelling about Sarah concludes with the time in which she awaits the return of Abraham and Isaac from the mountain on which Abraham followed God’s call to sacrifice his son, but was redeemed by the word from an angel.

Story in Scripture: Exodus 1: 8- 17:7, John 1: 1-17

Many children have some idea about who Moses was, but may not understand the details of his life. This week, we learned about God’s call for him and the adventurous events that took place when he entered into God’s story. To summarize, we discussed: (1) how Baby Moses was found and cared for by the daughter of an Egyptian Pharaoh, (2) his killing of an Egyptian soldier in defense of a Jewish slave (and how he ran away), (3) his reluctant acceptance of his role as a speaker for God’s people, (4) Pharaoh’s eventual release of the Jewish slaves, (5) the Exodus into the desert, (5) the revelation of the 10 Commandments and the admonishment because of the golden calf, (6) Moses’ death before reaching the Promise Land. It is a very lengthy story!

Story in Scripture: Genesis 12:24- 25:11

This week, we learned about the life of Abram- who became Abraham, the father of the Great Family. This is one of the first lessons of the season focused on the Old Testament “Sacred Stories.” Our attention to Abram’s story begins when God sends he and Sarah in to a new land. We spend considerable time discussing God’s promise fulfilled through the birth of Isaac, and Abraham’s difficult word from God to sacrifice his son (although of course, an angel of the Lord stops him and goes on to say, “God says, ‘I will make you the father of a great family… as many as the grains of the sand in the desert and the stars of the sky. And I will make of you a great blessing, because you obeyed me and trusted what I told you to do.’”

Parable of the Great Banquet (July 3rd)

Story in Scripture: Luke 14: 15-24

This week, we learned (or re-learned) the Parable of the Great Banquet. The children observed as so many different people were invited to a gorgeous banquet full of delicious food. When each would-be guest came up with more “important” things to do, the master sent his servant to bring in anyone he could find- widows, the poor, the blind, the sick- to enjoy the feast. Again, as with other parables, we shared that this one is like a door… even though it is meant for entering into, sometimes it feels like it is locked. We can return to it again later and perhaps it will be open to us. This metaphor is meant to help the children realize that, although parables are meant to help us better understand God’s story and the Kingdom of Heaven, it is often difficult to truly grasp the meaning- but that’s okay. We can return to these stories again and again throughout our entire lives.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

Now I wonder how it felt to be invited to this great feast?

I wonder why these people came and the others wouldn’t?

I wonder how the master feels about the guests?

Parable of the Good Samaritan (June 26th)

Story in Scripture: Luke 10: 25-37

This week, we learned (or re-learned) the Parable of the Good Samaritan. When we discuss parables with the children, we often equate them with a door… even though it is meant for entering into, sometimes it feels like it is locked. We can return to it again later and perhaps it will be open to us. This metaphor is meant to help the children realize that, although parables are meant to help us better understand God’s story and the Kingdom of Heaven, it is often difficult to truly grasp the meaning- but that’s okay. We can return to these stories again and again throughout our entire lives. The parable of the Good Samaritan is the same way. Our discussion in class focused on the idea that God calls us to love and serve ALL others, regardless of their background or what we think we have in common with them.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

Now I wonder who was a good neighbor to the robber?

I wonder how a Samaritan could be a neighbor?

Many people thought that Samaritans were not good. They were often looked

down upon and left out. How did the Samaritan show God’s love to the man?

Prayer:

“Lord, help me to understand your parables. Enter into my heart and mind so that I can be the kind of person that you have made me to be. I want to serve and love my neighbors- whoever they may be. Thank you for going alongside me as I try to be the hands and feet of Jesus. I love you and am so thankful for the stories that Jesus shared. Amen.”

Baptism (June 19th)

Season of the Church Year: Common Time/ “Great Green Growing” Season (green)

Story in Scripture: Acts 2:38- 39 & Matthew 28: 18-20

This week, we learned about Baptism. Each child was given the opportunity to either remember or look forward to the day of their own baptism, while considering the words of Jesus in the Bible. In the classroom, the phrasing we used was “receiving your light,” when discussing the sacrament of baptism. By lighting the Christ candle, and then igniting individual candles from his flame, the children were able to see that the light continues to grow, not diminish as it is shared. This metaphor is used again in future lessons.

Now I wonder what it was like on the day you received your light?...

I wonder what it was like on the day you received your light? … or I wonder what it will be like on the day of your baptism?

Prayer:

“Dear Father, thank you for providing me with a way to receive the light of your love. I am so thankful for my baptism into your family/ I look forward thankfully to the day in which I will be baptized into your family. Thank you for loving me and for blessing me in so many wonderful ways. Amen.”

Pentecost (June 12th)

Story in Scripture: Acts 2

This week, we learned the story of Pentecost. Children learned about the mystery of the Holy Spirit, coming to indwell the disciples and those that follow Christ. We will focus quite a bit on the miracle of language and communication about God. The disciples were able to speak in the various languages of the people there that day- this is very exciting to imagine! I recommend that you talk with your child about the various ways that God will equip them to share the gospel- sometimes in unexpected ways, but always with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

I wonder what it felt like to receive the Holy Spirit on Pentecost?

I wonder how Jesus’ friends felt as they told the amazing things about God?

I wonder what it was like for the people from all different places to hear the amazing words in their very own language?

Prayer:

“Dear Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Please be with me when I talk to others about Jesus and your love. Go along with me as I serve others to help them in whatever way I can. Ascension (June 5th)

Season of the Church Year: Easter (white)

Story in Scripture: Luke 24:44-53; John 14-17; Acts 1:1-11

This week, we learned the story of Jesus’ ascension. This is a particularly mysterious story with many various perspectives and interpretations throughout history. The primary theme we will return to in our lesson is the concept that Jesus was changed in an incredible way and that he was present with his friends before returning to the Father. Also, we will speak a lot about his promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit. I recommend that you encourage your child to embrace their questions and pray specifically to God for understanding and clarity.

Guiding Questions for Discussion:

I wonder how Jesus’ friends felt when Jesus went away?

I wonder if they kept looking for Jesus?

I wonder how they knew Jesus was still with them?

Prayer:

“Dear Father, thank you for saving me through the death of your son. Please help me to understand your kingdom and to look forward to the day when it will come to complete the beauty of your creation. Thank you for the stories of the Bible that help me to learn about Jesus and his friends. Amen.”

You may also pray the Lord’s Prayer, with specific attention on “Your Kingdom come…”

Learning through the Parables; Preparing for VBS

During Vacation Bible School this summer, students will be focusing on the parables that were told during Jesus’ ministry. When we teach about parables on Sundays, we often say, “A parable is like a door… sometimes that door opens easily and we are able to clearly see what is happening inside. At other times, the door seems to be locked. We try to understand, but it is still a great mystery. That is the way parables often are. Sometimes, you will open the door one day, but when you return to it, it will seem more difficult to open and understand. That’s okay. Jesus told parables to help us to better understand the Kingdom of Heaven. It is such a great mystery that these stories help us to begin to see what Jesus was talking about. They can be very confusing, but that is why we return to them again and again, even as we get older.” Throughout the week of VBS, we will address the many parables of the New Testament, but we will also learn about story-telling and the power of sharing life through our own stories, imaginary or anecdotal.

Children entering Kindergarten- second grade will attend from 9:00 am- 12:00 noon daily . Children entering third- fifth grade are welcome to stay from 9:00 am- 3:00 pm daily. Also, Youth in sixth- eighth grade may participate as Junior Counselors. Saturday will be a celebration picnic and field trip: from 9:00 am- 2:00 pm for all children and their families. Lovewell Project

You may have noticed some water bottles for sale in the trinityKids Gathering Room. These are part of a project that Abram and Asher Collier (students in our Preschool/ Kindergarten class) have begun to pour their energy into, along with their parents, Jake and Natalie. You can buy a water bottle for $3 (suggested donation). All proceeds go to blood water mission.

Lovewell is an initiative to illuminate the great stories being lived and fought for in the world around us with creative acts of benevolence and artistic expression to all of humanity, from the greatest to the least. We exist to raise awareness and help directly support those who love mercy and do justly.

Children's Books for Dealing with Grief

During the holidays, the previous death of a family member may be very difficult for a child (not to mention the adults around them). Seeing an empty seat for the first time at the Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve table may lead to questions and concerns that are especially tricky to manage. These books may help to encourage discussion and sharing for everyone and are written with the unique grief of children in mind.

   During the months of March, April, and May, trinityKids could use your help! Since, God-willing, I will be giving birth to my own little one in mid-March, we are hoping to get a full roster of volunteers in order to ensure that all areas are covered during my absence and in order to provide a safe and happy environment for all children. Even if you don’t serve regularly with the kids’ ministry, I would love your help on a Sunday or two during those months. The areas of greatest need are the Nursery, Walker, and Toddler rooms. The Celebration of Epiphany

For many of us, the beauty of Epiphany was not a part of our childhood; Christmas was simply followed by the New Year and eventually Easter. But the season of Epiphany is a wonderful reflection of our welcoming of the infant king into the world. Author David Katski succinctly summarizes this holy season as follows: “[Epiphany is] observed on January 6^th, the Epiphany celebration remembers the three miracles that manifest the divinity of Christ. The name "Epiphany" comes from the Greek word Epiphania, and means, "to show, make known, or reveal." The celebration originated in the Eastern Church in AD 361, beginning as a commemoration of the birth of Christ. Later, additional meanings were added the visit of the three Magi, Christ's baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle at the wedding in Cana. These three events are central to the definition of Epiphany, and it’s meaning is drawn from these occurrences” (sharefaith.com).

trinityKids will be celebrating the season of Epiphany by learning about Creation and the stories of the Old Testament. Throughout the Epiphany season, I recommend that you talk with your child about God’s revelations to the world through His story, which led the way toward our reconciliation through Christ. You may consider asking them,

“I wonder how God prepared the world for the coming of the baby Jesus?”

“I wonder how the people felt when they first heard about Jesus?”

“I wonder if the people who understood God’s story realized what was really happening?”

Advent III and IV & the Advent Jesse Tree

the Advent Gospel story... in pageant form

   On Saturday, the children did a fantastic job sharing the story of our Savior's birth, as told in the books of Matthew and Luke. It was glorious. There were so many precious moments of grace, innocence, and sweetness (with a little mischief, as well, of course). Nearly 200 community and family members attended to learn of the mysterious and miraculous beginning of Jesus' life on earth.
   Thank you especially to Marty Reardon and the other Worship musicians that assisted in making the pageant a unique and beautiful opportunity to glorify God. Thank you to Glen Sutton for doing an excellent job with the sound, lights, and perfecting the traveling star. Also, I am so thankful for Emily Braund and Corrie Madlem, who helped to herd our sheep and cow chorus from behind the scenes.

Resources for Celebrating Advent at Home

Throughout the Advent Season, things can become overwhelmingly busy with holiday parties, family traveling, cookie decorating, and the countdown to Christmas morning. There are a lot of wonderful resources available to assist Trinity’s families in adding an element of contemplation to your Advent season. Please let me know if you have are looking for ideas on how to incorporate these resources at home.

*Bartholomew’s Passage, Jotham’s Journey, and Tabitha’s Travels by Arnold Ytreeide are fantastic books that provide a daily reading for children and their families to read together and discuss. The stories are historical fiction and are told during the days preceding the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. These stories are interwoven and are recommended to be read one at a time, over a three year period. This is an incredible resource!

Advent II & the Advent Jesse Tree

On Sunday, we talked at length about God's story and it's culmination in the miraculous life and redeeming death of Jesus. As we walked through the first six symbols of the Advent Jesse Tree, some beautiful insights were shared by the children. The realization that Jesus was with God in Creation, in the need for reconciliation after Adam and Eve's betrayal in the garden; His presence was even acknowledged in the promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. One child thoughtfully added, "Jesus was really the lamb that let Isaac not get killed." What a beautiful synthesis of God's plan!

This week, we will be discussing the next six symbols, as described below.

Christmas Pageant preparations have begun!!

As Advent and Christmas approach, we will begin preparing for the annual Christmas Pageant. Children 4 years old through fifth grade will sing, act out the Advent Gospel, and enjoy a celebration reception. This year’s performance will be a little bit more low-key, so we will only be rehearsing three times before December 18, when we will perform for our church community. Rehearsals will take place on Sundays, Dec. 5 & Dec. 12 at 2:00 pm and Friday, Dec. 17at 6:00 pm (Dress Rehearsal). Please sign up in the Gathering Room & be sure to pick up a CD with the music so that your child can be included. Only a few children will have speaking parts, so even shy actors are welcome! J

Advent & the Advent Jesse Tree

   The Advent season is a sacred time of preparation and anticipation as we near the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Each year, we celebrate through the telling of the Advent story, the lighting of Advent candles, and the retelling of traditional Christmas stories. This year, we will be adding a new tradition. Devotions connected with the tradition of the Advent Jesse Tree will be guiding us through various symbols that will encourage discussion and creativity in the telling of an old story. As described by Dean Meador Lambert, this tradition “seeks to tell the story of God’s redemptive plan for the world through 25 symbols from the Old and New Testament. The symbols trace the heritage of Jesus Christ from the beginning of creation. Each symbol [can be] explained with scriptures, devotions, questions, prayers, a memory verse, and songs.” We will be using Lambert’s book of devotionals to explore the Season of Advent through these symbols and the stories that they tell. In order to help your family prepare for the first six symbols (aligned with the first six days of Advent), they are:
Day 1: The Light of Creation (represented by a picture of the Earth); Genesis 1:1
Day 2: The First Sin (represented by an apple and a snake); Isaiah 53:6
Day 3: Inside the Ark (represented by an ark with a rainbow); Romans 6:23

The changing of the seasons is a beautiful time to reflect on God’s creative plan and the ways in which He formed nature to be a sustaining, cyclical part of our lives. When one season ends and another begins, we often take notice of the passing of time and contemplate the events that have passed since the weather last changed in its pattern. During a collaborative worship time together recently, students in the preschool- third grade classes considered the ways that God demonstrates through His creation that there is a time for every purpose (using Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8). In response to this discussion, children created a large drawing to display some of their thoughts about the changing seasons and other images that came to mind through the scripture. Please take a moment to enjoy these collaborative artworks, hanging on the back wall of the Gathering Room. Also, I recommend that you take a moment to talk with your child about the seasons and God’s timing. A few guiding questions are listed below; we will be asking similar questions in the classroom on Sundays as we draw nearer to the Advent season.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every purpose under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,

a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

Atlanta Schools Database

Parents often ask about neighborhood day cares and schools. When considering where to send your child for away-from-home education, the questions can be overwhelming. How are charter schools and neighborhood public schools different? Should I send my child to a religious private school or one that has a more academic focus? Should I go with the school around the corner or is it better to explore the school choice system outlined in NCLB? Do standardized test scores really matter? In response to these concerns, trinityKids will soon be making available a resource for Trinity families. This resource will include basic information about Atlanta schools, especially those that are attended by children from Trinity. This will be a good place to go for information about tuition, locations, reflections on school atmosphere, and the unique benefits and differences of each school. Parents have graciously provided feedback about their own experiences and their insights will be available as well. Hopefully this will be a useful resource that will empower parents to reach out to others in the Trinity community for input and to make the best choice possible for their children.

Teachers' Resource Closet- now open!

Attention teachers, parents, tutors, nannies, and babysitters:

I am happy to announce the grand opening of the Trinity Teachers' Resource Closet!! It really is just a closet, but it's filled with many teaching gems that have been gathered throughout the course of my teaching tenure- in other words, eight years of hoarding educational stuff. A few things have already been borrowed by new teachers, but there is plenty more to lend out. Math manipulatives, big books, science materials, teacher resources, incredible materials from Teaching Tolerance that can be adapted for early elementary all the way up to High School, posters and other visuals... even plastic bins and letter boxes that are great for organizing your classroom. I have tons of stuff! Come borrow it! The Teachers' Resource Closet is located in the Walkers Room (down the back hall past the Women's restroom), in the very back corner. Thank you for adhering to the posted “check out” policy and for keeping it tidy! Don’t forget, I also have a treasure trove of guided reading book sets, fiction and non-fiction picture books, as well as an early reading series available to borrow in my office.

Community Events will Continue!

Our summer of fun and community included just about every kid-friendly activity in Atlanta- from bowling, to cooking at the Young Chef’s Academy, to a free day at the High Museum. It was fantastic to build relationships each week and to participate in the city that we all love so much. But don’t worry, Community Events will continue in the Fall and Winter. Monthly Community Nights for kinder through fifth grade kiddos have become a staple of trinityKids- they are so much fun! We will also be making plans to go pumpkin picking in October, as well as another cooking class at YCA. The summer has been a season full of learning, wondering, and curiosity. The curiosity of the children has been especially piqued by a focus on Old Testament figures and the opportunity to better understand the deeper history of God’s people. Although the stories and timelines of these incredible individuals often leave us with more questions than answers, exploring the dedication, determination, and commitment of these brave believers offers innumerable avenues for life application. Whether children are discussing the ways that Samuel was open to God message for him and through his life, or the difficult patience and frustration of Sarah, these stories are a wonderful way to find ourselves in scripture.

I encourage you to take some time to converse with your child about the Old Testament. As we frequently express during our time together on Sundays, “All these things happened to tell God’s story. God’s story is adventurous and interesting, but it all leads toward Jesus and his birth and death here on Earth.”

When teaching children about the Old Testament, it’s helpful to focus on the central themes…. the uniqueness and glory of God; the Law; God's influence on world history and nature; corporate and individual sin and the remedy; and the proper way to worship God. It can often be confusing to explain to children that the Old Testament also tells that the Jews were God's chosen people, which is the main reason for their special protection- and their special punishment when they did wrong. But again, most importantly, the prophecy of Jesus is inherent in God’s story; it is first and foremost in God’s plan. I recommend asking your child open-ended questions that will enable them to consider for themselves how the lives of God’s people in the Old Testament can be a model or a lesson for their own. Here are a few questions that we frequently ask after sharing an Old Testament story:

*Now I wonder which part of the story you liked best?

*I wonder what part is the most important?

*I wonder what part is about you…. Or what part was especially for you?

*I wonder if we can leave anything out of the story and still have everything that we need?

*I wonder what the story of this person and their family might be teaching you?

*I wonder if you’ve ever had a tough time with some of the things that this person also had to deal with? I wonder if you can learn from what they did- what to do or what not to do?

trinityKids "Summer Schedule" is ending

FYI: This Sunday, September 5th, will be our last day of our "Summer Schedule." Children in pre-school through 5th grade will attend the musical worship with their parents, then join their teachers for a lesson after that. As always, younger children will be checked in at the beginning of the service. On Sunday, September 12th, children will return to a "regular" schedule, in which all children will check-in at the beginning of the service. On the 12th, those children who are ready to move up to a higher age class will be invited to do so.

The Great Green Growing Season

As the Easter Season ends, we will be beginning a time of learning and growing often called “Common Time” on the Liturgical calendar. In trinitykids, we call this time the “Great Green Growing” Season, as that is what we strive to do. This season is a time for learning more about the work of Jesus and the work that he has commissioned us to do, which is to “…go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28: 19-20). The lessons that are taught during this time are focused on the parabolic teachings of Jesus, as well as character studies & story telling from the Old Testament. This is a special time for growing in our faith and learning more about our role as the hands and feet of Christ. Another important aspect of this time will be the beginning of the summer schedule in trinitykids. Similar to last summer, students will join their parents for worship during the months of June, July, and August. Students in preschool through 5^th grade will then be checked in as usual (after the initial musical worship time has ended), at which time they will enjoy a lesson or art response time, led by one of the trinitykids teachers.

trinityKids Summer Events!

This summer, trinitykids will be gathering often to build community, have fun, and enjoy our wonderful city. We will continue with the monthly Community Nights, but we will also be meeting weekly to enjoy other events around the city and the surrounding areas. All children (even the little bitty ones) are welcome to attend, as long as they are accompanied by an adult (parent, babysitter, nanny, family member). Think of these as big community Play Dates. A full schedule of the events, locations, and costs is available in the Gathering Room. Signups will begin in mid May, so please take a moment between now and then to decide which events you or your family will attend. I have worked hard to find the most reasonable prices and many locations offer group discounts, so be sure to sign up ahead of time to take advantage of the lower cost.

It's going to be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to grow as a community of friends.

trinityKids will be hosting an artist reception to celebrate the youngest artists in our community. Beginning April 9th and continuing throughout the Easter season, paintings, drawings, and sculpture created by artists in preschool through 5th grade will be on display. Each piece was created in response to lessons & stories taught from scripture. On May 7th, please join us for a proper Artists' Reception. The Easter Season

The Season of Easter is a very special time in the church year. Of course, it is about more than Easter bunnies and pastel colored eggs. The Easter Season is a wonderful time to glory in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Throughout the weeks of Easter, we can focus our time and energy on the reunion we have with God our Father. We can focus on the beauty of his creation and all the wonderful blessings we enjoy because of God’s benevolence and grace. I encourage you to celebrate these things with your children. Remind them every day that God has given them an abundance of blessing through their families, their friends, their teachers, the natural world around them, the food that they eat, and the incredible freedoms that they enjoy. trinityKids and the larger Trinity family will be celebrating the Easter Season through art, music, story-telling, and community building. Let us take joy and excitement in the resurrection! Christ has died, Christ has RISEN, Christ will come again! Also, please celebrate those children and young people who committed their lives to following Christ by being baptized on Easter. Congratulations to Mia, Pressley, Deonte, Anna, Andrew, & Caid!!

This prayer can be a reminder to us of the miracle of Easter::

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy  Spirit you have bestowed upon us, your servants the  forgiveness of sin and have raised us to the new life of  grace. Strengthen us, O Lord, with your presence, enfold  us in the arms of your mercy, and keep us safe forever. Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and earth is names, grant you to be strengthened with might by his Holy Spirit, that, Christ dwelling in your hearts by faith, you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

As a child, I felt that information was validated and solidified if I read it in a book. I was a bookworm early on, and found that seeing information in black & white provided a level of confidence for me. It also provided a place that I could return to again and again and each time learn a bit more. Even still, I look to literature and nonfiction to further deepen my understanding of God and his story. In the past months, trinityKids teachers have been incorporating literature that supports the Biblical stories that are being shared. Books are shared during Worship Days as well and children are encouraged to embrace the opportunity to be with God through stories, art, and through acting out the events in a story. These books are chosen with care so that they complement the Scripture, rather than distracting from it. If you are interested in purchasing your own, they should be available on amazon.com and at your local library. Here are a few that have been wonderful:God’s Paintbrush by Sandy Eisenberg, If the World were a Village by David J. Smith, and Miracles and Wonders by Eric Kimmel.

Celebrating Lent with Children

Lent is a precious and sacred time in the church year. It is a season for preparation and focus on the miracle of the Resurrection; a time to draw closer to the mystery of God’s love and compassion for us. It is difficult for children to fully realize the incredible gift that was given when God gave his only son as a sacrifice for our sin. Children can, however, be encouraged to think deeply about and speak openly about God and Jesus through story telling, worship, and prayer.

There are many ways to help children enter in to the season of Lent thoughtfully and in a way that feels right for them. Consider speaking frankly with your child about sacrifice. Perhaps they could “give up” something during the weeks of Lent in order to experience sacrifice in a small way. Or as a family, you could spend more time in prayer or in reading from the Bible daily. There are many picture books that can also be read to elicit conversation and better understanding for children. We will be discussing these themes in the trinityKids classrooms and worship times; I encourage you to talk with your child at home as well and help them to acknowledge and participate in the season of Lent as we look forward to the Resurrection.

"Embracing Different Learning Styles" Class

trinityKids will be offering a class for parents, teachers, and volunteers at Trinity. The primary theme of the class will be Howard Gardner's "multiple intelligences", or learning styles. All children (and adults) learn in their own special way. When instruction only addresses one or two of these styles, children can become frustrated, apathetic, or disillusioned. When multiple learning styles are addressed in an educational environment (at school, church, home, or elsewhere), children feel validated, encouraged, motivated, and hopeful.

In this class, you will consider the various ways that children learn and grow. You will learn how to encourage the "multiple intelligences" in your children (or those that you work with) and the children here at Trinity. The material for the class is based on my 7 years of experience in teaching Elementary school, as well as some of my Master's coursework in Curriculum & Instruction. I will try to make it as accessible as possible for parents and teachers alike. It is going to be a fun and active class. I will be offering this class on Wednesday, March 10th (6:30- 9:00 pm) & Wednesday, March 31st (6:30- 9:00 pm) as well. Please just respond with a comment if either of those dates work better for you! :)

Children & Baptism

The season of Lent brings with it an atmosphere of sacrifice, refinement, and preparation. As we try to realize that depth of love that led to Christ’s crucifixion, we may draw near to the disciplines of study & meditation. As we seek to refine ourselves and prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ, perhaps we aspire to spend more time in fasting and silence. During the weeks of Lent, children will be invited to spend time in preparation as well. Through a series of focused lessons and discussions, children who are interested will have the opportunity to ready themselves for Baptism. Children will explore the importance of Scripture & the Ten Commandments, will be guided through the Lord’s Prayer, and will learn more about Prayer. This preparation class is called “Catechism.” Catechesis is simply “an education in the faith of children, young people and adults which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted, generally speaking, in an organic and systematic way, with a view to initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life” (from Catechism of the Catholic Church).

If your child has expressed interest in Baptism, I encourage you to talk frankly and honestly with them and pray fervently for the Lord’s guidance about whether or not to join the Catechism class. The Apostle Peter wrote, “and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledgeof a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 3:21).

At Trinity, children will be meeting during the 11:30 service with a trinityKids teacher in lieu of their regular class time. Please sign in as usual, letting the Administrator know that your child will be attending the Catechism class. The class will begin on March 7^th and will continue until March 28^th. Baptisms will take place through immersion on Easter Sunday during the 11:30 service. It is expected that catechumens will attend all four classes.

The Lord's Prayer

Children in preschool through fifth grade will be spending a significant period of time over the coming months learning about and memorizing the Lord’s Prayer. The trinityKids teachers and volunteers will be working with them weekly to practice and understand the prayer; your thoughtful attention at home is appreciated as well!

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

Some thoughts on Children & Spiritual Disciplines...

Children have a beautiful way of connecting with God through their creativity, expression, and thoughtfulness about the ways of the Kingdom. Through providing them with guidance and support at home and in their worship space, children can develop mature habits in the spiritual disciplines.

Throughout the coming months, we will be bringing focus to the disciplines of prayer, worship, and study. Utilizing the book Habits of a Child’s Heart by Valerie Hess, teachers in the Godly Play classrooms will be providing children with the opportunity to explore these disciplines on their own and with guidance. If you would like to provide insight about ways in which you teach these disciplines at home, we would really appreciate it.

It is our hope that all families connected with trinityKids will be able to say, as in the book of Joshua, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)

Expectations of Parents

*Complete the Child Information form and update it as necessary. The more we know about your child’s individual needs, the better we can serve them!

*Drop off and pick up their children on time. Late drop-offs and late pick-ups may disrupt lessons and put a strain on volunteers, please be respectful of their time.

*Read and understand the trinitykids brochure, as well as check the parent information board frequently to stay abreast of changes or updates. We will do our best to keep you informed. Also, the Godly Play newsletters provide questions that are an excellent way to continue discussions at home.

* Respect the privacy of other trinitykids participants. Please refrain from discussing personal child issues (i.e. behavior, family concerns, etc.) in front of children or other parents, it would be best if you move these discussions to a more secluded area, out of the ear-shot of children. Use discretion when discussing all child issues.

*Follow Gathering Room procedures (parents may drop students off & pick up students in the Gathering Room door is open, otherwise, please do not disrupt class time). We desire that the classrooms would be a sacred space for student learning and sharing about God.

Children have a natural affinity for community, bridge building, and fellowship. I have often been astounded by the ease at which children befriend one another, find areas of commonality, and forge friendships with their peers. Despite their closeness on Sunday, many of the Godly Play students return each Sunday afternoon to different neighborhoods and prepare for school each week at different elementary schools. In an effort to build community, trinityKids will be organizing a monthly activity that is open to all trinityKids students and their friends. For now, these will take place on the second or third Friday of every month, but this pattern may change in the future.

On January 22 (not January 9^th as previously communicated), trinityKids will be hosting a Community Night from 6:30- 8:30 pm. Children from in kindergarten- 5^th grade will be welcome to enjoy hot apple cider and winter craft creation. Pizza will also be available for $1 (suggested donation) per slice. Volunteers will be guiding the children through the entire evening, so parents are welcome to drop their little ones off or hang around. Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided for parents in the café so that they can enjoy some “grown-up” fellowship as well. Signups for this fantastic and fun event will begin on January 3^rd. Learning Opportunities for Volunteers & Parents

Learning and growing are as much a part of our lives as adults as they are for our children. It is my firm belief that the ability we have to increase our knowledge as individuals is one of the greatest blessings we have. There will be many opportunities for volunteers and parents alike to learn and grow in the coming months. Whether you are interested in becoming certified in CPR & First Aid, understanding more about the Godly Play curriculum, or exploring what it means to lead children through spiritual disciplines; a class will be offered in each of these areas. A schedule of upcoming classes is available in the trinityKids Gathering Room.

So far, all available classes are offered on Saturdays. Please email me at juliaguy@trinityvineyard.org to sign up or for more information. Most classes take place on Saturdays from 10 am- noon, but arrangements can be made to schedule classes at alternate times. Also, if you have an area of expertise or knowledge that you would like to contribute please let me know- we will create an opportunity for you to share!

Enjoying the Season of Epiphany

For many of us, the beauty of Epiphany was not a part of our childhood; Christmas was simply followed by the New Year and eventually Easter. But the season of Epiphany is a wonderful reflection of our welcoming of the infant king into the world. Author David Katski succinctly summarizes this holy season as follows: “[Epiphany is] observed on January 6^th, the Epiphany celebration remembers the three miracles that manifest the divinity of Christ. The name "Epiphany" comes from the Greek word Epiphania, and means, "to show, make known, or reveal." The celebration originated in the Eastern Church in AD 361, beginning as a commemoration of the birth of Christ. Later, additional meanings were added - the visit of the three Magi, Christ's baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle at the wedding in Cana. These three events are central to the definition of Epiphany, and it’s meaning is drawn from these occurrences” (sharefaith.com).

trinityKids will be celebrating the season of Epiphany by learning about Christ’s temple blessing, baptism, and early ministry. Throughout the Epiphany season, I recommend that you talk with your child about Jesus’ revelations to the world through his miracles, love, and teachings. You may consider asking them,

“I wonder how God prepared the world for the coming of the baby Jesus?”

“I wonder what the Magi were thinking when they first saw Jesus after traveling for so long?”

“I wonder how the people felt when they first heard about Jesus?”
